Over a period of more than 20 years, Supernatural presents athletes of the Olympic Games. In 2000, Katja Stuke watched the Sydney Olympics and captured the athletes’ faces on her television screen. She repeated the same procedure at the subsequent Summer Games, from Athens (2004) to Tokyo (2021). Without being physically present, Stuke captures the moment of an athlete’s peak concentration. By reframing the images in close-up and taking them out of their media context, the artist intensifies the emotions. These portraits are rasterized through the surface of television screen, giving these frozen faces a supernatural appearance. Over the years, this project has reflected the evolution of broadcast and camera technologies. For the Paris 2024 Olympics, the photographer is completing this constantly evolving series. read more »»
